Threats to game shooting are real, and to underestimate them would be unwise. The government’s recent announcement that it is to consider the licensing of all “recreational gamebird shooting and release” is a serious attack on our sport, as the introduction of licensing would first require them to be banned. The government’s licensing regime for gamebirds in or within 500m of Special Areas of Conservation and Special Protection Areas has also restricted shooting activities in those designated areas, and the extension to the ban on burning of vegetation in the uplands has more than trebled the area over which this vital management tool is no longer possible.
